About: Thalassaemia is an inherited blood condition characterised by the premature destruction of red blood cells. It is found mostly in people whose ancestors come from countries around the Mediterranean Sea, the Middle East and Asia. Thalassaemia is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. There are two types of thalassaemia; Alpha and Beta. Alpha thalassaemia can be more severe than beta thalassaemia. People with beta thalassaemia may be treated with frequent blood transfusions and therapy to remove the excess iron gained from the transfused blood. Those who have only one faulty copy of their haemoglobin gene are called genetic ‘carriers’ of thalassaemia or have ‘thalassaemia minor’. They have very few symptoms but may have mild anaemia.
